Take Action to Support Afterschool

In the past few months, Illinois’ Governor and the U.S. President have proposed eliminating afterschool program funding. We know how vital your programs are and that 100,000’s of youth in Illinois still need access to affordable afterschool programs. We need you to help us fight back and make our message heard–we need funding for afterschool programs to keep youth safe, improve academic outcomes, and support hard-working families!

Participate in April Advocacy

This year instead of holding its traditional April Advocacy Day in Springfield ACT Now is coordinating an in-district advocacy initiative to help get out the message to policymakers about the importance of afterschool from April 10, 2017 to April 21, 2017. Legislators will be in their district offices for much of April. We want providers to use this opportunity to meet with legislators, invite policymakers to site visits, and take action to support afterschool. Our April 2017 Advocacy Toolkit has resources to help you take action in a variety of ways on issues affecting 21st Century, Teen REACH, Child Care Funding, and expanding funding for afterschool.

What Advocacy Actions Should You Take?

  • If you have 1 minute: Send in an action alert from the toolkit.
  • If you have 5 minutes: Find your legislator’s contact info (see toolkit) and call and ask them to support your action.
  • If you have 10 minutes: Write a letter to your legislator using the fact sheets and templates in the toolkit.
  • If you have more time: Schedule an in-district meeting or site visit with your legislator or collect success stories from parents and youth in your program.

If you are interested in taking action, fill out his form. After you take action, record it here so we know what you are up to. If you have any questions, contact Susan Stanton at stantons@metrofamily.org
