ISBE FY18 Budget Hearing

The Illinois State Board of Education will be holding a budget hearing in Chicago on November 18th at the Thompson Center (100 W. Randolph St., Conference Room 16-503) starting immediately following the Board meeting at approximately 1:00 p.m. There is a separate hearing date in Granite City at the GCHS Atrium (3101 Madison Avenue) from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information, click here.

Given the difficult financial situation many programs have found themselves in over the past year and half, it is important that ISBE hear from providers about the importance of making a state education investment in afterschool. The ISBE FY17 budget included a $15-million-dollar line for afterschool programs that was funded through the stopgap. At the hearing, ACT Now encourages providers to ask that ISBE use $12.5 million of the $15 million afterschool programs line in its FY17 funding to fund the Healthy Communities Incentive Fund in the lowest performing districts with the lowest per pupil spending to supplement youth’s educational experiences. We will ask that the remaining $2.5 million be made available to agencies in the districts receiving the healthy communities funding to provide enhanced services to existing afterschool programs. Further, we ask that ISBE continue to make this commitment to afterschool moving forward, including in its FY18 budget. We also support the addition of the Office of Community Schools.
